The little orchid that could …

When I received this orchid as a gift blooms abounded, this was several years ago, and although the dry air and limited sunlight in my apartment may not be the most suitable environment for this type of plant, it still managed to bloom again the following year. Fewer flowers and smaller blooms but still, it bloomed.
After that, nothing for the next four years. I had come to accept that all I’d enjoy from this plant were aerial roots and big leathery leaves.
Happily it proved me wrong.
What a nice surprise when I first noticed the flower-spike just emerging. Things looked rather promising; four flowers seemed to be developing.
But soon one stopped growing, stunted before it could even take any real shape.
A couple of weeks later, although the three remaining buds were still closed tight, you could make out a pinkish hue. Midway through their development though, another gave up on me (I was starting to take this personally), it shriveled up and fell off the stem…
When the remaining two flowers finally opened I was beaming like a proud father.
Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but still I was pretty content.
So naturally I wanted to record the event. It may be a while before this happens again, if at all…
